Revolutions

Nuit Blanche 2019

Revolutions is a participatory and performative painting installation as part of Nuit Blanche 2019 in Scarborough, that brought movement to the usually static process of collaborative mural-making. Lead by The E.W.o.C. Project and Monica Gutierrez, the 24 hour painting installation partnered with architect Car Martin and artists Daniela Rocha, Francine Peltier, and Curtia Wright.

Revolutions allowed Nuit Blanche audiences to paint the curved structure alongside five female-identified BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) artists as well as ride the connected bicycle, which kept the structure in constant motion throughout the night. Inevitably, artists painted over each other’s work creating a constant cycle of creation and destruction, of building up and layering over.

Revolutions vibrantly renders the intersecting stories of women of colour in Toronto and Scarborough. It holds a double meaning: referring to the rotating motion of the structure, as well as the empowering theme of collaboration in under-served communities.

The Revolutions team would like to thank the TAC Animating Toronto Streets program, and the George Brown College School of Design.
